The story of the Lake of the Woods slide

An old photograph of a tall slide that extends into a lake. There are people in the water surrounding it, as well as standing in line on the stairs.
Champaign-Urbana History on Facebook

During his Year of the Park series, Seth discussed the swimming hole and giant slide that was once a part of Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve District. This week Champaign County Forest Preserve District shared this fun little informational video about the slide and beach that used to be a big draw at Lake of the Woods, explaining why no longer exists. I have to admit, it would’ve been fun to try that thing, but ultimately the focus of CCFPD is preservation and maintaining a hospitable environment for the living creatures there. It’s also why Freedom Fest is ending after this year.

CCFPD is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, and there is a special exhibit at Museum of the Grand Prairie detailing their history. There are lots of opportunities to recognize the milestone this summer.
