The Formula SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers) team (formerly Illini Motorsports) is a registered student organization that builds and races combustible engine cars. Their performance scores over the past three years have earned them the top ranking in the world, over 347 other teams.

The organization is beginning a new chapter, after merging with the Illini Formula Electric team to form Illinois Electric Motorsports, which will exclusively compete with electric vehicles. Their first competition will be in June.

They are supported by The Grainger College of Engineering, and in particular the Department of Mechanical Science & Engineering, and while many participants are engineering students, they have team members and invite team members from a variety of majors.

You can read more about the team’s successes in this article from The Grainger College of Engineering website.
