CHAMPAIGN—Bend the Arc:CU and CU Progressives are sponsoring a rally and march on Monday, February 18, to protest the president’s declaration of a National Emergency on the southern border.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Champaign Public Library’s first-floor meeting rooms with speeches from partner organizations. Ralliers will then proceed to march down Green St. to the Champaign Municipal Building.

The rally will be one of hundreds planned across the country to protest what most legal experts consider to be a dangerous and illegal power grab by the president.

“This country is facing an emergency, but it’s not a border emergency,” says Diane Ore, chair of Bend the Arc:CU. “It’s a moral emergency prompted by state-sponsored cruelty of unimaginable proportions. To concoct this so-called national emergency to thwart the bipartisan will of Congress and the majority of this country is an outrage.”

Partners for the rally include CU FAIR, Champaign County Young Democrats, CU Indivisible, and ACLU of Champaign County.
