With the ongoing construction happening at Edison Middle School, a bit of history has been uncovered. Having two kids that attended EMS, both of whom were in band, I’d heard that the band room was sitting on top of what used to be a swimming pool.
The building was Champaign High School from 1914 to 1956, then Edison Junior High from 1956 to 1977, before it became Edison Middle School. The pool was eventually covered by a concrete floor, but there was indeed a hatch in the band room that revealed the space below.
