Smile Politely

Three questions with Sweet Megg

A young woman in a whilte cowboy hat crouches in front of a maroon backdrop with her body facing left, and her face toward the camera, looking over her shoulder. She is wearing a shimmery black dress, fishnet stockings and dressy black shoes. Her head is tilted down as she smiles and her left hand is holding the brim of her cowboy hat.

This week’s participant is Sweet Megg from Nashville, via Paris, via New York. Her varied influences ranging from jazz, to blues to country, are the basis of her unique sound and will be on display this Friday, March 22nd at Rose Bowl Tavern in Urbana.

Smile Politely: If you had to perform a duet with an artist from a drastically different genre, say, heavy metal or electronic dance music, who would it be and what song would you choose to cover together?

Sweet Megg: I would say David Byrne [lead singer of Talking Heads] and probably a classic like “Burning Down the House”.

SP: You’ve lived in Paris, New York, and now Nashville. If you were to write a comedic song about adjusting to life in Nashville as a New Yorker who studied jazz in Paris, what would the chorus include?

Sweet Megg: OMG! if I knew the correct answer to that question I would have a great song! I guess it would probably mention something about being afraid to show your roots but eventually letting them come out once you’ve proven you respect and love country music.

SP: Considering your diverse musical influences, if Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, and Bessie Smith were to form a supergroup with you in Nashville, what would you name the band, and what kind of music would you insist on playing first?

Sweet Megg: Ha knowing the personalities of all those ladies and myself that would be a tough group of women to decide upon a song. I think the only way that would work would be to make it a cabaret and everyone got their own song. That’s a big list of Divas with a capital D in the best way possible. Maybe we would do a show that had a theme and everyone picked a song to sing. I think heartbreak and the strength of a woman is a theme that all of them could sing about. Basically, the blues in so many words.
