The Overture: May 6–12

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Tuesday, May 7th at 7:30 p.m.

Error Records is at it again this week with a few touring bands from Texas and one from Florida. Their show fell through and they’re picking up this date here in C-U, so this is an early show this week. Florida’s Strengthen What Remains had a bit of trouble with their tour bus a few weeks ago, nearly stranding them in California. Help them out and come out and support them this week in Champaign.

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($25 advance/$28 door)

WHEN: Tuesday, May 7th at 8 p.m.

Yes, Papa Roach still exists. As a matter of fact, they’re performing in Urbana this week early at the Canopy Club. Interesting to say the least. They’re calling this tours that they’re on with Escape the Fate and Otherwise “The Connection Tour.” It will just be Otherwise joining them this time, with Danville’s Degrade the Signal hopping on as the opener.

EDITOR’S PICK: I AM GOD., SPAGHETTI RECESS, WITHERSHINS
The Art Theater ($3) — Wednesday, May 8th at 9:30 p.m.

This is local glitch pop trio I am God.’s last show, and they’re going out in a pretty awesome way this week. Alongside Spaghetti Recess, a new side project consisting of members of Grandkids with Phil Sudderberg, and post-rock outfit Withershins, all bands will be performing alongside a film of their choice. The film will be projected and they’ll be creating the score for each.

They’re calling it “Sound+Light: Rock Concert” and I am God. will be performing to A Talking Cat!?! (2013), Spaghetti Recess with a Silent Film Medley, and Withershins to Moon (2009). Sounds really awesome, and it’s at the Art Theater no less. We’ll have a closer look at this later in the week.

WHAT: Mutts, Sun Stereo, The Curses

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Thursday, May 9th at 7:30 p.m.

Mutts are releasing a new record this week at Mike ‘N Molly’s with a couple of solid locals Sun Stereo and The Curses to support. Their new record is entitled Object Permanence, which you can stream over at their Bandcamp page. Katie will be putting together something later this week to discuss this show, which will (hopefully) be in the beergarden. The weather looks like it will allow it.

WHAT: Earth Witch, IL Cattivo, Lark’s Tongue, Thundertruck

WHERE: The Highdive ($7)

WHEN: Thursday, May 9th at 8:30 p.m.

Heavy show going on over at the Highdive in the early show on Thursday headlined by C-U’s Earth Witch. If you weren’t aware, Earth Witch is comprised of members of local bands RVINS, Enta, and Dino Bravo. Pretty awesome. They’re joined by touring acts IL Cattivo and Lark’s Tongue, as well as local rock outfit Thundertruck.

WHAT: Sarah and the Tallboys, Falldown

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($6)

WHEN: Thursday, May 9th at 9 p.m.

Americana/blues rock crew Sarah and the Tallboys make their way through C-U on their Midwest tour. This is the first stop (one of three in Illinois) on their tour. They recently moved from Chicago to Nashville, so they’re coming back around these parts to pay a visit.

WHAT: Jarrel Young, Lil Ze, I2K, Jonah, JEFFdaMC

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, May 10th at 9 p.m.

Another release show happening at MIke ‘N Molly’s this week. Local emcee Jarrel Young will be releasing his new mixtape, Chemical Imbalance, Vol. 1 this week alongside some supporting acts. Special guest Lil Ze will make his way down from Chicago to perform, and local emcees I2K, Jonah, and JEFFdaMC support.

WHAT: Feast By Fire, Eminent Slaughter, In The Name of Suffering, and Redneck Remedy

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($6)

WHEN: Friday, May 10th at 9:30 p.m.

Metal bands unite this Friday as Feast By Fire leads the pack as the headliner. Definitely a cheap show for the amount of bands performing over there at The Canopy Club, especially if you’re a metalhead and live for these shows.

WHAT: Shahman, Kowabunga Kid, Greys, Marathon

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, May 11th at 7:30 p.m.

Shahman comes from Canada and makes some noise rock music. They’re on tour with Greys, who are also from Canada, and play rugged punk tunes. They’ll both be joined by Kowabunga Kid and Marathon, two cool bands from C-U, so there’s that. Pretty solid show all around.

WHAT: Vader, DJ Belly, Harsh

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($2 after midnight)

WHEN: Saturday, May 11th at 10 p.m.

DJ show going on over at Cowboy Monkey this weekend. Vader is coming down from Chicago to join in with a couple of local staples, DJ Belly and Harsh, to spin on Saturday night.

WHAT: Direct Effect, Ex-Breathers, Book Mobile, Cops & Robots, Finer Feelings

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Sunday, May 12th at 7:30 p.m.

A Sunday Error Records show to round out the week features five bands on the bill. Florida’s Direct Effect has a new record out, and they’re joined by hardcore/post-punk outfit Ex-Breathers (also from Florida), and three locals to round things out. Pretty diverse show with hardcore punk mixed with pop-punk and indie rock. Should be interesting.
