Check out these amazing ice shelves forming around trees in the forest preserves

All around Champaign County winter is wintering. The weather is cold and icy and school closures have been wrecking havoc on parents. However, there are some creative ways to enjoy the winter months, and right now, all around our forest preserves there are amazing ice shelves forming.

According to this post by the Champaign County Forest Preserve “the cold temperatures and fluctuating water levels [create] these unique, natural ice structures in our floodplain forests.” I’ve included a few pictures from the River Bend Forest Preserve in Mahomet, but there are many more pictures in the comments and on the CCFP Facebook page right now. It doesn’t change the fact that my kids just dumped an entire bucket of Lego’s on the floor, but it is a nice little break for my eyeballs.
