The African American Heritage Trail has expanded into Homer with two new signs. Homer was chosen because it has a rich history as a village where many 19th and early 20th century African Americans in Champaign County could gather, work, and build successful lives for themselves and their families.

The first sign recognizes Homer Park as a significant place for African Americans to build community in the 1800s and 1900s; the second sign “recognizes early African American achievements, education, families, and leaders in Homer.” You can read more about the AAHT in our interview with the co-chairs Angela Rivers and Barbara Suggs-Mason.
