Do you have those movies that you never get tired of watching no matter how many times you’ve seen it? Drumline is one of those for me. I was in marching band in high school, and my awe of HBCU marching bands is endless. If you haven’t seen it (and I’m very sorry if you haven’t), it’s a 2002 film starring Nick Cannon, Zoe Saldana and Orlando Jones, in which Cannon is a hot shot drummer who gets recruited to go to the fictional HCBU Atlanta A&T, and he butts heads with traditionalist band director Orlando Bloom, as well as the drumline section leader. Much band drama ensues.
On January 8th, Drumline Live!, a live show based on the movie, will be coming to Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts. From the event description:
With riveting rhythms, bold beats and ear-grabbing energy, the staged show will be a synchronized musical showcase of the HBCU experience. Incorporating original compositions and soul-infused interpretations of top 40 hits, group performances will range from colorful, choreographed routines to heavy doses of drum riffs and cadences.
Tickets are just $13, and are available online. I can’t imagine that the show would be anything other than joy-inducing. Loud, probably, but amazing. Also, Drumline Live! is the group that performed with Beyoncé at Coachella.
