In October of 2021, MTD unveiled the newest additions to their fleet — two hydrogen fuel cell buses that produce zero emissions, fueled by an onsite hydrogen production station that is powered by solar panels.

By next winter, there will be ten more of these buses, which according to MTD, “save over 50,000 gallons of diesel fuel per bus each year, and one bus reduces greenhouse gases up to 135 tons annually.”

A recent The News-Gazette article noted that the new buses will be 40 feet long (the current ones are 60 feet), and the four remaining diesel buses will be retired at the end of the year. The remainder of the fleet consists of hybrid diesel-electric buses.
