The treats by Amy’s Sweet Delights are awesome

The newest food business to move into Lincoln Square Mall is Amy’s Sweet Delights out of Royal, Illinois. The baker just started setting up shop inside the Urbana mall three days a week at a stand in front of the Art Coop.

Amy’s Sweet Delights offers a nice variety: cinnamon rolls, miniature cakes, frosted sugar cookies, candied pecans, and powdered lemonade.

My friend and Culture Editor Louise wanted intel on the new baker’s cinnamon rolls specifically, so I diligently stopped by to try the vendor’s cinnamon rolls.

Amy’s Sweet Delights had three kinds of cinnamon rolls available, which was more choice than I expected. There was an original cinnamon flavor plus an apple-cinnamon pan and a box of mini rolls made from dough scraps, which the owner’s husband said was his favorite. As if that wasn’t enough sweet rolls, the stand also sold sticky buns with topped with candied pecans.

I bought a box of the original cinnamon rolls ($10), which had four in a pan. One unique thing is that these didn’t have any cream cheese in the frosting. Instead, this frosting was a decadent brown sugar and cinnamon icing. Even though I do like cream cheese frosting, I loved this take and just how smothered in it the rolls were. The brown sugar-cinnamon frosting was super sweet and gritty with sugar crystals, and it tasted awesome over the freshly baked rolls. Radiating cinnamon flavor from the inside out, the rolled yeast bread was soft yet sturdy enough to hold the iconic swirled shape. These were totally delicious.

When I saw the $2 pricetag for the cookie sandwiches, I also bought one of those. I am a snob about chocolate chip cookies in particular (because I make really good ones if I do say so myself), but these cookies were so freaking good. The cookie buns were perfect little chocolate chip cookies sandwiching homemade frosting with rainbow sprinkles along the outside. I loved the buttery crumb and gooey mini chocolate chips, a sign that these cookies were baked recently. The vanilla frosting was yummy even as it squished out the sides, and for sure, this was an insanely sweet bite. But what should we expect from a sandwich comprised of cookies and frosting and sugar sprinkles?!

Amy’s Sweet Delights’ stand in the Lincoln Square Mall is very new, so the hours may change over time. For now, the dessert stand is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or until cinnamon rolls are sold out) on Tuesdays and Thursdays plus Saturday mornings during the indoor winter market.

Follow the bakery on Facebook for real-time updates about hours and menu.
