There’s still time to register for the spring residential electronics collection event on May 18th

This week amongst our Smile Politely editor group, we were just floored by the amount of trash that was collected by volunteers for the Boneyard Recycling Day back on April 20th. 23,000(!) pounds of trash! That is astonishing, and we are grateful to all of those who help make Champaign-Urbana more beautiful.

Another way you can make C-U more beautiful is by properly recycling your electronics. Louise posted about this back when it first was announced, but I’m here to remind you that it is coming up in just a few weeks, and there’s still an opportunity to sign up for a slot.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about this, welcome! Here is the information from the City of Champaign:

CHAMPAIGN – The Countywide Residential Electronics Collection (CREC) event this spring will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Parkland College.

To attend the CREC event, residents of participating Champaign County communities must register online in advance at https://ecycle.simplybook.me/.  The online registration process allows residents to reserve an available 15-minute time slot between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.  Upon reserving a time, residents will receive confirmation via email and/or text message.  Then, 10-14 days before the event, they will receive a postcard in the mail that will serve as their “ticket” into the event.

CREC participating communities this year are Bondville, Broadlands, Champaign, Fisher, Gifford, Homer, Ivesdale, Longview, Ludlow, Mahomet, Ogden, Pesotum, Rantoul, Royal, Sadorus, Savoy, Sidney, St. Joseph, Thomasboro, Tolono, Urbana, and unincorporated Champaign County.

A list of accepted and non-accepted items can be found on the registration website.  There is a four (4) TV limit per household, with a seven (7) item total limit per household.

Residents who have registered to attend the CREC event will need to use the Duncan Road entrance into Parkland College.

CREC events are co-sponsored by the City of Champaign, City of Urbana, Champaign County, Champaign County Court & Probation Services, and Village of Savoy; with financial support provided from each participating community.  The CREC event will go ahead rain or shine.  Severe weather will increase wait times but wait time should still be minimal.

Online registration will remain open until all of the 15-minute time slots are full.  There are still plenty of spots available.  If you would like assistance registering to attend the event, call 217-403-4780 or email [email protected].
