The Overture: Feb. 22 – 28

WHAT: Baths, Braids, Houses

WHERE: Canopy Club ($12)

WHEN: Tuesday, February 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

Baths, who we published an interview with yesterday, is making major inroads with his downtempo brand of instrumental hip hop. Braids are similarly named to that that one famous act from around here, but are actually a Canadian psych band. With Chicago lo-fi artist Houses kicking things off, this promises to be an enjoyably chilled out night at Canopy.

WHAT: El Guapo

WHERE: The Iron Post ($TBA)

WHEN: Wednesday, February 23rd at 8:00 p.m.

El Guapo may be unfamiliar to most, but they’re actually a covers project featuring members of Scathe, Trailer Park Moses and X-Krush. This is as good a night as any to head out to the Post (as if you needed an excuse…)

WHAT: Skrillex, Positive Vibr8ions, Milk ‘N Cookies

WHERE: Canopy Club (sold out)

WHEN: Thursday, February 24th at 9:00 p.m.

This one is WAY sold out, which would seem to bode well for Skrillex’s insanely frenetic blend of breakcore and dubstep. I seem to recall Positive Vibr8ions and Milk ‘N Cookies being nothing to sneeze at live, either.

WHAT: Database, Midnight Conspiracy, CZO

WHERE: Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Friday, February 25th at 10:00 p.m.

Already big in their native Brazil, Database are yet to break into the US. That may be changing very soon, considering that they have upcoming sets at SXSW and Noise Pop. It’d probably be pretty cool to say you saw them for five bucks, right? Plus, their amped-up French House is difficult not to like.

WHAT: Clark Gibon Quintet, Lara Driscoll Trio

WHERE: Red Herring ($2)

WHEN: Saturday, February 26th at 9:00 p.m.

The Red Herring’s jazz series has been one of the better under the radar events going on in town lately, and you should probably take this chance to check out area pianist Lara Driscoll. If that weren’t enough motivation, there’s a $2 cover and bottomless coffee for a dollar.
