Engineering Open House crushed

A concrete slab being crushed by a pressure machine two-stories tall, surrounded by a crowd of people

My family and I went to check out this year’s Engineering Open House this past weekend on campus at the University of Illinois. Packed full of programming, there really is something for everyone and acts as a true showcase of the depth and breadth of ingenuity inside the Grainger College of Engineering.

One highlight was watching this concrete crusher absolutely demolish a huge slab of concrete at the weight of 2.5-3.0 million pounds of pressure. As you can see, it attracted a crowd because obviously, watching things be (safely) destroyed is fun for all ages. There were tons of exhibitions, we checked out the Lego Design lab, the build your own sand castle exhibit where students discussed countries they travel to in order to build bridges, and more on the Bardeen Quad.

Did you attend? If you missed it this year, don’t worry, this year’s event was the 102nd(!) annual, so it’ll be back next year with more, no doubt.
