Owners Kaya Speagle and Kelly Whiting made the announcement yesterday. Here is what they had to say in a recent post:

It is with a mix of emotions that we write to you today, as we have some bittersweet news to share. After much contemplation and consideration, my family and I (Speagles + Whitings) have made the difficult decision to sell our beloved neighborhood bakery and market.

Over the many years, you have become more than just valued customers to us; you have become an integral part of our bakery family. Your unwavering support, kind words, and warm smiles have made our journey all the more meaningful. We have shared countless conversations, laughter, and even tears, creating memories that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

However, life has a way of presenting unexpected opportunities and challenges. In our case, the desire to be closer to our family in Boise, Idaho, has become an undeniable calling. We long to spend more time with our loved ones since having small children, cherishing the moments that are often missed when distance separates us. Relocating to Boise will allow us to create new memories and strengthen the bonds that mean the world to us.

While this decision was not made lightly, we are committed to finding a buyer who will embrace the bakery and market with the same love and passion that we have poured into it. We want nothing more than to see our legacy continue, and for the bakery to remain a cherished gathering place for the community. We are actively seeking someone who will honor the traditions we have established, while also bringing their own unique vision and ideas to breathe new life into this beloved establishment.

As we embark on this new chapter in our lives, we want to express our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our journey. Your loyalty and support have been the driving force behind our success, and we will forever be grateful for the trust you have placed in us. We hope that you will continue to support the bakery during this transition, and we have full confidence that the new owner will strive to maintain the same level of quality and service that you have come to expect.

Please know that we will keep you informed throughout the process, and we will do everything in our power to ensure a smooth transition for both our staff and our valued customers. We are committed to making this change as seamless as possible, and we will be available to address any concerns or questions you may have. We do not expect a quick transition, so please stop by for our oldies but goodies theme where we bring back all of your old favorites!

In closing, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your unwavering support and friendship. The memories we have created together will forever hold a special place in our hearts. As we embark on this new adventure, we carry with us the hope that the bakery will continue to be a place of joy, laughter, and connection for the community we hold dear.

Thank you once again for being a part of our lives and for your understanding during this transition. We will always cherish the memories we have shared, and we hope that you will continue to support the bakery as it embarks on a new and exciting chapter.

Message from Kelly (who is NOT moving):

Our lives have changed in the best ways since we opened this little corner shop. We’re not selling because we’ve found something better, we’ve decided that it’s time for our next chapters. It truly could not be a happier time, in both of our lives. We want these memories to hold their weight and not be diminished by hardships that inevitably happen in every business (or when your best friend moves to  IDAHO).

The Speagle’s will be across the country (a heartache saved for next summer) but like us, our boys will have a special bond rooted in this little corner of the world we created. Wyatt can’t wait to jump in the Mooney and travel to see Soren + Alder’s new home – new traditions will be started and memories made. And obviously, Aunt Kaya will have a tasty snack when we get there. 😉

Never did we plan on me running or working at the shop, and truth be told I’m just not cut out for it – for so *so* many reasons. I’m just not the right person to take the torch but someone is and I can’t wait to meet them.

My only hope is whoever buys our shop is ready to love our community and customers the way we have over the last 6 years. A giant plus would be a tolerance for little boys who love mop buckets and sunshine cookies.

This gives a little more context to the Hopscotch Brunchette closing at The Literary. Hopscotch opened at it’s current location on John Street in 2017, after operating out of Art Mart. Read our 2020 interview with Speagle here.
