Thirteen restaurants participated in C-U’s Vegan Chef Challenge last month. From a chickpea smashburger to mock duck in a spicy sauce, Champaign-Urbana restaurants came up with brand-new dishes for the June challenge. C-U’s Vegan Chef Challenge received over 200 votes from diners and hosted an awards ceremony at Triptych Brewing.

First place was awarded to Siam Terrace, Downtown Urbana’s Thai restaurant. Second place went to Kohinoor Indian Restaurant and third place to Martinelli’s Market.

There were other awards as well. Best Dessert was awarded to Neil St. Blues for their vegan sweet potato pie, Best Baked Good to RegCakes Bakery, and Best Overall Menu to Big Grove Tavern.

The organizers hope to host the event next year with even more participating Champaign-Urbana restaurants.
